Fellows Expand Americans' Access to Their Health Records

VAi2 is hosting two members of the inaugural class of Presidential Innovation Fellows. The program invites top innovators from outside government to collaborate on solutions that deliver significant results in six months.

Henry Wei and Matt McCall lead the Blue Button® for America project, working with the private sector to spread the implementation of personal health records and help people use their own data to improve their health and health care.

Welcome to VAi2, the flagship Open Government initiative for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs—a 300,000-person organization executing a single mission: serving those who served. VAi2 creates opportunities for the Department to test new ideas from industry, VA employees, and academia. Our focus is on improving access, quality, cost, and satisfaction throughout the Department.

VAi2 pursues this goal in three ways: employee competitions, industry competitions, and special projects. This allows us to tap into rich sources of innovation while remaining flexible to capture new opportunities.

Follow us here on the web and on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to get the latest news on new competitions, project awards, and special projects.

On March 29, Secretary Shinseki announced the 2012 VAi2 Industry Innovation Competition with up to $50 million in potential awards. This competition is designed to give the Department a structured way to identify, fund, and evaluate promising new solutions in four key topic areas.

VA encourages submissions from all parts of the private sector—established companies, start-ups, non-profits, and academia. The deadline for submission is May 29, 2012.

The four topics for 2012 are:
Maternity Continuity of Care
Redesign of the PTSD Treatment Experience
Mobile Applications for eBenefits
Innovations in Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers
