NEW BEA ECONOMIC AREAS FOR 2004
The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) today releases updated definitions of BEA economic areas that reflect changes in economic growth and population in the U.S. regions and that now include the newly recognized micropolitan areas. As a result, BEA's estimates of personal income for these economic areas continue to support statistical analyses that reflect current regional economic activity.
This release marks an advance in the timeliness of the redefinition of BEA economic areas by a full quarter. BEA's estimates of personal income for these areas are now consistent both with the new standards for statistical areas that were released by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in February 2004 and with population data from the 2000 decennial census. The accelerated redefinition of BEA economic areas meets BEA's Strategic Plan goals of continually improving methodologies and of improving the consistency among accounts in the Federal statistical system.
BEA's economic areas define the relevant regional markets surrounding metropolitan or micropolitan statistical areas. The areas, which now number 179, up from 172, are widely used throughout the federal government and in the private sector. BEA's local area personal income accounts and its regional multiplier accounts both use the economic areas to produce official estimates. Examples of other federal government use include defining national transportation analysis regions, assessing competition levels in markets for oil pipeline services, and defining mobile communication licensing territories. Regional councils of government and economic development agencies use the economic areas for research and market analyses, while the private sector uses the areas to determine markets for products.
The map on the following page and table 1 show the BEA economic areas, numeric codes, and selected economic statistics. Additional information about the redefined BEA economic areas will appear in the November 2004 issue of the Survey of Current Business, BEA's monthly journal: Detailed data and code files

Per capita personal income was computed using Census Bureau midyear population estimates. 2. Percent change calculated from unrounded data. 3. The personal income level shown for the United States is derived as the sum of the county estimates. It differs from the estimate of personal income in the national income and product accounts (NIPAs) because of differences in coverage, in the methodologies used to prepare the estimates, and in the timing of the availability of source data.
