The First Lady & Education

As a former public school teacher and librarian, Mrs. Laura Bush believes that reading is the foundation of all learning. During the Administration of President George W. Bush, Mrs. Bush fostered initiatives that encouraged parents to read to young children, helped to empower teachers, and worked to ensure all students had an equal chance for success in the classroom. To learn more about Mrs. Bush’s education initiatives, both global and domestic, please see her biography and the Archived White House Website education section.

Mrs. Laura Bush's Family Favorites

"Every person deserves to experience the joy of books. A good book is like an unreachable itch - you just can't leave it alone. Stories beckon us to toss aside all cares in the world - work, laundry, even sleep - to read and discover." – First Lady Laura Bush, 2003 National Book Festival

Teachers especially understand the joy and wonder that good books can bring to their students. If you are looking for wonderful books to share with students, be sure to check out Mrs. Laura Bush's Family Favorites for a list of suggestions!
