Brigadier General John Hort has served in a variety of command and leadership positions during his 27 year military career. Most recently he served as an infantry brigade commander with 3rd Brigade 4th ID, Fort Carson Colorado where he deployed his brigade from 2007-2009 to East Baghdad, Iraq. Colonel Hort also deployed during 2005 - 2006 to Taji, Iraq as the Army's senior military advisor to the Iraqi 9th Mechanized Division. His other operational experiences include Operation Able Sentry in 1994 in support of the Macedonian United Nations Peace keeping mission and company commander during Operation Just Cause, Panama from 1989 - 1990.
Additional command and leadership positions include Squadron Commander at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin California and Long Range Surveillance Detachment Commander, Fort Riley Kansas. Brigadier General Hort has also served as the G3 7th Infantry Division at Fort Carson Colorado, plans officer for US Central Command, MacDill AFB, Florida, Squadron and Regimental XO, and Chief of Plans at United States Forces Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His military schooling includes the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks Pennsylvania, Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) II at Norfolk, Virginia and the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He attained his officer commissioning from the University of North Carolina and holds advanced degrees from the University of Central Michigan and the United States Army War College.
Brigadier General Hort's significant awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with Valor, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge with star, and is ranger and airborne qualified. He is currently serving as the Deputy Commander (Rear) of 3rd Infantry Division following his previous assignment as the Special Assistant to the FORSCOM G3.
