Lawrence S. Margolis

Judge Margolis was appointed a Judge of the United States Court of Federal Claims on December 10, 1982, and began serving on December 15, 1982. On December 15, 1997, he took senior status and continues to serve as a Senior Judge. He graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia (formerly the Drexel Institute of Technology), receiving a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree in 1957, and from the George Washington University Law School, receiving a J.D. degree in 1961.

Judge Margolis formerly served as: Patent Examiner, U.S. Patent Office, 1957-1962; Patent Counsel, U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory, 1962-1963; Assistant Attorney General for the District of Columbia, 1963-1966; Attorney, Criminal Division, U.S. Department of Justice, 1966-1968; Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, 1968-1971; United States Magistrate Judge, 1971-1982. He also served as a member of the District of Columbia Judicial Conference.

Judge Margolis is a Fellow of the Institute of Judicial Administration and the American Bar Foundation, and a member of the American Bar Association (former Chairman of the Judicial Administration Division and former Chairman of the National Conference of Special Court Judges), the George Washington University National Law School Alumni Association (former President), and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia (former member of the Board of Directors). He has served as a Trustee of Drexel University and is a member of the Drexel 100 (top 100 graduates). Both George Washington University and Drexel University have awarded Judge Margolis the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He is also a former President of the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. and past District Governor for Rotary International. He was selected as Rotarian of the Decade by the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C. in 2005, and was recently elected to the Central High School Hall of Fame in Philadelphia.

Judge Margolis chaired the Court's Space and Building Committee, the Court's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, and the Court's Security Committee. He also served on the Court's Management Committee and is presently serving on the Court's Standing Panel on Attorney Discipline. While chairing the Space and Building Committee, five new Senior Judges Chambers were constructed at the Courthouse. The Court won a National Award for its Alternative Dispute Resolution program during his year as chairman.
