Outreach Programs

At the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), we understand that science and technology have been and will remain the engines of economic growth and national security in the United States. In addition, we understand that excellence in discovery and innovation in science and engineering are the direct result of a well educated workforce. It is a workforce that is being challenged by two trends: the global competition for science and engineering talent that impacts the pool of available scientists and engineers (S&Es) available in the U.S. and the declining number of native-born S&E graduates entering the workforce. ARL is poised to intervene and improve the success in educating S&E students from all demographic groups, especially those that have been historically underrepresented in S&E careers.

As an ARL employee...

You will not only be serving your nation, but you will also be working with some of the top minds in the scientific community. ARL researchers are at the forefront of their fields and are often sought for their expertise by both public and private scientific organizations. Although the talent and prestige of ARL researchers is truly immeasurable, a good gauge of their competency is through their recognition by the international scientific community.

Our scientists:

  • Publish hundreds of papers per year
  • Are cited by scientists across the globe
  • Hold over 60 prestigious positions in technical societies
  • Are guest speakers at hundreds of scientific lectures around the world

As an ARL employee you will always benefit from your fellow scientists' accomplishments through many mentorship opportunities.

It's about opportunities...

In research, in a career and in service to your nation.

Researchers at ARL are solving some of our nation's biggest challenges. They are considered vital in the worldwide technology battle to develop basic and applied research to enhance our Soldiers' abilities and help protect the nation. No matter what level of education or experience you have, ARL will give you the opportunity to contribute to the research that supports our Soldiers.

ARL focuses its efforts in the areas of: computational information sciences; human research and engineering; sensors and electron devices; survivability and lethality analysis; vehicle technology; and weapons and materials research.

ARL fosters scientific creativity in a wide range of scientific disciplines. Scientists at ARL have access to multiple avenues of development in both their research and career goals.

The sense of satisfaction of knowing that their work can make a difference to Soldiers every day spurs discovery among the nearly 1,300 scientists and engineers working in ARL's world-class facilities.

Freedom, Flexibility and Great Benefits

Scientific creativity and federal employment go hand-in-hand.

A government research position offers stability not always found in the corporate world and fosters researchers' abilities to try new ideas. Among the many benefits of federal employment, ARL researchers enjoy the ability to actually choose the direction of their research and are rewarded for creativity.

At ARL, developing technologies that keep the U.S. Army the best fighting force in the world is the bottom line, and we support our scientists with the flexibility they need to attack unique challenges.

Continuing education is a key benefit ARL offers to its researchers. Whether it's a bachelor's, master's or doctorate you seek, ARL can be your avenue to achieve it. Multiple opportunities exist for paid tuition and laboratory time made available to accomplish your goals.

In addition to unparalleled research and education advantages, the federal government offers unequaled entry, mid and long-term career benefits packages that include:

  • Paid holidays
  • Comprehensive health insurance
  • Vacation and sick days
  • Training and education
  • Flexible work schedules
  • Cost-of-living increases
  • Pay for performance increases
  • Thrift Savings Plan (comparable to 401K)
  • Life insurance
  • Retirement benefits
  • Merit promotion system
