Michelle and I warmly remember our meeting with the Holy Father in 2009, and I have appreciated our work together over these last four years. The Church plays a critical role in the United States and the world, and I wish the best to those who will soon gather to choose His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI’s successor.

Vatican Radio interviewed Cardinal Sandri during the CNEWA meetings about the support needed for Eastern churches.

    Secretary of Defense Panetta meets Pope

    Vatican City, January 16, 2013 -- Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta met with Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Rome. The Pope thanked him for helping to protect the world while Panetta asked the Pope to pray for him. Panetta was on a six day trip to Europe to visit with foreign counterparts and troops in the area.

    Vatican City, January 7, 2013 -- The officers from the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See joined accredited diplomats from all countries with official relations with the Holy See for the Pope’s annual address to the diplomatic corps. Ambassador Díaz was proud to serve almost three and a half years in his position as the 9th U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See.
