Statement by the President on His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI
Washington, February 11, 2013 -- On behalf of Americans everywhere, Michelle and I wish to extend our appreciation and prayers to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Michelle and I warmly remember our meeting with the Holy Father in 2009, and I have appreciated our work together over these last four years. The Church plays a critical role in the United States and the world, and I wish the best to those who will soon gather to choose His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI’s successor.

Vatican City, January 16, 2013 -- Representatives of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) were guests of the Chargé d’Affaires at Villa Richardson, the residence of U.S. Ambassadors to the Holy See. Pictured is Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. Vatican Radio interviewed Cardinal Sandri during the CNEWA meetings about the support needed for Eastern churches.

Secretary of Defense Panetta meets Pope
Vatican City, January 16, 2013 -- Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta met with Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Rome. The Pope thanked him for helping to protect the world while Panetta asked the Pope to pray for him. Panetta was on a six day trip to Europe to visit with foreign counterparts and troops in the area.

Vatican City, January 7, 2013 -- The officers from the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See joined accredited diplomats from all countries with official relations with the Holy See for the Pope’s annual address to the diplomatic corps. Pictured is Chargé d’Affaires Mario Mesquita greeting the Pope following the address. In his address the pope expressed his hopes for peaceful international relations during the year.

November 7, 2012 -- VATICAN CITY — Miguel H. Díaz, United States Ambassador to the Holy See since 2009, will leave his position following the presidential elections and return to academia effective the week of November 13, 2012. Ambassador Díaz was proud to serve almost three and a half years in his position as the 9th U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See.
