    United States-African Union Sign MOU to Strengthen Partnership

    On January 30, African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson Dr. Nkozasana Dlamini-Zuma signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) further cementing the United States-African Union partnership. Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Johnnie Carson, present at the AU signing ceremony, presented Chairperson’s Dlamini-Zuma’s signed copy of the MOU to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who signed the MOU as one of her last acts in office on February 1.

    USAID and AU Sign Joint Implementation Letter

    U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Assistant Administrator for Africa Earl Gast and African Union Commission (AUC) Deputy Chairperson Erastus Mwencha signed a letter clarifying joint implementation and future collaboration on the development of geothermal energy in East Africa.

    On January 22, the United States Mission to the African Union (USAU) hosted a “happy hour” for American citizens working at UN agencies in Addis Ababa. The reception allowed USAU staff to meet with fellow Americans working at the international organization.

    On January 21, U.S. Ambassador to the African Union Michael Battle, AU Commissioner for Social Affairs Dr. Mustapha Kaloko, and PEPFAR Ethiopia Coordinator Dr. Carmela Green-Abate unveiled a Partnership Quilt to cement their joint commitment to an AIDS-free generation in Africa. The quilt will be displayed at the AU for the duration of the 20th AU Summit.

As newly independent nations struggled to face what many regarded as the insurmountable challenges of democracy, development, and economic growth, newly independent people looked forward to embracing an era of opportunity and optimism. This promise also inspired me to enter the Foreign Service
