Funding Opportunities Announcements (FOA)

Since opening its doors in 1995, The Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) has worked to achieve the goals of its authorizing legislation by effectively highlighting and supporting the scientific opportunities that exist in basic and applied behavioral and social sciences research. Guided by its Strategic Plan, OBSSR has been working actively with its IC partners to develop funding opportunities in the behavioral and social sciences. Although OBSSR does not have grant-making authority, it has been active in organizing and funding (through transfers to NIH Institutes and Centers) a variety of trans-NIH research programs.

New Funding Opportunities from OppNet, the NIH Basic Behavioral and Social Science Opportunity Network.

OppNet requests your input on priorities in Basic Behavioral and Social Science Research!

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., announced the launch of the Basic Behavioral and Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet) on November 18, 2009. OppNet is a trans-NIH initiative to expand the agency's funding of basic behavioral and social sciences research (b-BSSR). Basic-BSSR furthers our understanding of fundamental mechanisms and patterns of behavioral and social functioning, relevant to the Nation's health and well-being, as they interact with each other, with biology and the environment. Research results lead to new approaches for reducing risky behaviors and improving health.

For more information, please visit the OppNet Web site at http://oppnet.nih.gov
Information on current OppNet funding opportunities can be found here.
Information on the current Request for Information (RFI): To Solicit Input on Priorities for the NIH Basic Behavioral and Social Science Opportunity Network (OppNet) can be found here.

Recovery Act: NIH Challenge Grants

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) (H.R. 1, S. 1), NIH has received $10 billion to be used in Fiscal Years 2009 and 2010, $100-200 million of which is designated for a new initiative called the NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research (RFA-OD-09-003). The program will provide jumpstart funds to make a difference in addressing defined health and science problems where reasonable progress is feasible in this time frame.

Each NIH funding component (Institute/Center) has identified specific Challenge Topics within the broad Challenge Areas related to its mission. To learn more about OBSSR priority topics, please click here.

BSSR Guide to Grants and Contracts

OBSSR provides an e-mail service for announcing NIH funding opportunities in the behavioral and social sciences. Once or twice a month, OBSSR distributes via e-mail a listing (with hyperlinks) of recent funding announcements (Program Announcements, Requests for Applications, Notices) published in the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts. To receive these periodic (about every four to six weeks) announcements, please join the special listserv.
