Federal Trade Commission Protecting America's Consumers

For nearly two decades, the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice have actively promoted market competition around the world by providing technical assistance, initially with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development and now increasingly with its own funds, to new antitrust agencies and to countries in the process of reforming their markets and adopting antitrust laws. The Federal Trade Commission has also provided assistance on consumer protection issues. Since 1991, the agencies have conducted approximately 400 missions to scores of countries on short-term trips and multi-month advisory missions.

During this workshop, Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice officials described how their programs have worked and discussed ideas for maximizing their future effectiveness. Through interactive panels, the agencies also obtained the perspectives of other aid providers in the field, academics, and private practitioners, with a view toward making improvements and charting a course for the future.
