Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH)

Scientific Seminars, Symposia, & Workshops

ORWH supports conferences and workshops at NIH and nationwide that highlight research on women’s health and sex differences. Through its partnerships with NIH ICs and offices, other Federal agencies, and extramural organizations, ORWH coordinates opportunities for collaboration and exploring emerging scientific concepts and technologies.

Women’s Health Seminar Series

The ORWH Women’s Health Seminar Series features nationally and internationally recognized experts presenting their research on women’s health and sex differences. Past series have included sex differences and pain research; social media and the NIH mission; and environmental exposures and women’s health.

Annual NIH Interdisciplinary Women’s Health Research Symposium

The NIH Interdisciplinary Women’s Health Research Symposium is presented annually in November and showcases research from two ORWH signature initiatives: the Specialized Centers of Research (SCOR) on Sex and Gender Factors Affecting Women’s Health and the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) program. The annual meetings for principal investigators and scholars associated with these initiatives coincide with the annual symposium.

Women’s Health Scientific Interest Group Lecture Series

The Women’s Health Scientific Interest Group (WHSIG) Lecture Series, sponsored by ORWH and organized by the NIH Intramural Program on Research on Women’s Health, presents lectures by experts in women’s health research from the NIH intramural program. WHSIG is a forum for researchers across NIH to meet, collaborate, and learn about sex and gender differences that are relevant to molecular, cellular, genetic, and developmental processes. Recent series have included lectures on the science of anterior cruciate ligament injury risk, outcomes and recovery; human papillomavirus; bullying in the workplace; and post-traumatic stress disorder following mild traumatic brain injury.

Trauma Spectrum Conference

The Trauma Spectrum Conference is a trans-Federal collaboration of Department of Defense, HHS and the Veterans' Administration. It is presented by the ORWH with NIH Institutes, the Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other Federal partners. The two-day meeting focuses on bridging the gap between research and clinical practice of psychological health and traumatic brain injury for military service members and Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These resources are available from the 2011 conference: A videocast of Day 1 (focus on TBI) , a videocast of Day 2 (focus on PTSD) and a Trauma Spectrum Conference information packet.

Anita B. Roberts Lecture Series: Distinguished Women Scientists at NIH

The Anita B. Roberts Lecture Series, Distinguished Women Scientists at NIH, sponsored by ORWH and the NIH Women Scientist Advisors Committee, highlights outstanding research achievements of women scientists at NIH. The series is dedicated to Anita Roberts, former chief of the Laboratory of Cell Regulation and Carcinogenesis and honors her role as an exceptional mentor and scientist.

Association for Women in Science Seminar Series

Each year, ORWH funds a seminar series for the Bethesda, MD, chapter of the Association for Women in Science. The series includes seminars of interest to early career investigators. In addition to lectures, the chapter holds an additional unique event annually: “Have a Meal with your Mentor,” which encourages young scientists to network with potential mentors in an informal environment.
