Mission

We improve the health of Veterans through the development of sound policies and programs related to several major public health concerns. This includes HIV infection, hepatitis C infection, seasonal influenza, smoking and tobacco use cessation, health-care associated infections, and other emerging public health issues.

Our primary focus is the health of Veterans. In order to achieve this goal, we work with Veterans and their families, organizations that represent and support Veteran health care needs, and the variety of providers who deliver clinical, preventive, and support services to Veterans.

Our mission is accomplished through a variety of efforts, including: education and outreach, policy development, clinical demonstration projects, quality improvement initiatives, population based surveillance, performance measurement, clinical practice guidelines, and research.

Whom we serve

The VA health care system is the largest integrated health care system in the nation. In 2010, VA served approximately 6 million individuals from a Veteran population of over 22 million Veterans. There were over 679,000 inpatient admissions, and outpatient clinics registered over 76 million visits. VA is the largest single provider of HIV care and hepatitis C care in the United States. In 2010, over 24,000 Veterans received care for HIV disease in VA and over 165,000 Veterans who used VA health care services had laboratory tests confirming chronic hepatitis C.
