Enterprise-Wide Initiatives

The initiatives outlined in the preceding sections represent an enormous opportunity to enhance the NCI's clinical trials enterprise. They will, however, require substantial coordination, management, and oversight in order to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of NCI clinical trials without introducing needless complexity and delays. Therefore it is essential that NCI also enhance its internal organizational structure to effectively address these challenges.

For full details on the initiatives, see the CTWG Report (PDF - 366KB).

The CTWG Enterprise-Wide Initiatives

Initiative 1: Establish a permanent clinical trials extramural oversight committee to advise the NCI Director on the conduct, oversight, and implementation of clinical trials across the Institute.

Initiative 2: Develop a coordinated organizational structure within the NCI to manage the entire clinical trials enterprise supported by the Institute.

Enterprise-Wide Initiatives-Key Accomplishments

  • The Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials (CCCT) is central to NCI's efforts to accelerate the delivery of new tools into the clinic through its translational science and clinical trial enterprises in conjunction with all NCI Divisions, Offices, and Centers. CCCT facilitates and manages the operations of CTAC and CTROC.
  • The Clinical Trials and Translational Research Advisory Committee (CTAC) provides advice to the NCI Director, Deputy Directors, and Division Directors on the NCI-supported national clinical trials enterprise to build a strong scientific infrastructure by bringing together a broadly developed and engaged coalition of stakeholders involved in clinical trials. This encompasses oversight of all trials both extramural and intramural.
  • The Clinical Trials and Translational Research Operations committee (CTROC) is an internal NCI advisory committee responsible for review of ongoing and prioritization of proposed NCI-supported clinical trials, correlative science programs, and translational research. CTROC members include the Directors of all NCI Divisions, Offices, and Centers that have clinical trials or translational science portfolios.
