Honoring Our Public Servants.
Connecting Citizens with Their Government.

May 5–11, 2013

Celebrated the first week of May since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) is time set aside to honor the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees and ensure that our government is the best in the world.

Throughout the country, mayors, governors, agency leaders, communities and public service organizations participate in PSRW by issuing proclamations; hosting award ceremonies and special tribute events; and delivering messages about the value of public service.

PSRW is organized annually by the Public Employees Roundtable (PER) and its member organizations. New in 2013, PER will host its first annual Public Service 5K run/walk in Washington, D.C. Other feature events in Washington include a public town hall meeting with Cabinet secretaries and a congressional breakfast to announce the finalists of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals.

Our theme for PSRW 2013 is “Why I Serve.” Throughout the week, we will invite agency leaders and elected officials to share stories about why they answered the call to serve in government and what accomplishments they are most proud of in their time as public servants.

Public servants deserve our thanks throughout the year and we invite you to continue honoring them for the work they do each and every day. Ideas range from sending messages of thanks to holding appreciation events to highlighting employee accomplishments on your website or newsletter. For additional suggestions, please download our How to Celebrate PSRW Guide.

On May 8, 2012 the Partnership for Public Service, Public Employees Roundtable and federal agency leaders held a town hall discussion about what agencies are doing to deliver vital public services at a lower cost, how to communicate that value to the American people, and ways to show appreciation to employees and keep them engaged during times of tough budget cuts.

ABC News Political Commentator moderated the discussion with Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini from the General Services Administration.

Res. 419) are Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine), Carl Levin (D-Michigan), Joseph Lieberman (ID-Connecticut), Tom Carper (D-Delaware), Frank Lautenberg (D-New Jersey), Jim Webb (D-Virginia), Christopher A. Coons (D-Delaware), Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts), and Benjamin L. Cardin (D-Maryland).

Senator Akaka said: "I am pleased the Senate has agreed once again to honor our public servants.  Over the course of my career in public service, I have worked with so many talented, hard-working people dedicated to helping others.  I have been inspired meeting countless men and women who come to work every day to serve their communities and country.  These admirable Americans provide so many of the vital services that make our way of life possible."
