General Background:

The Habitat Conservation Division reviews and evaluates the impacts of development activities within the region on marine, estuarine and anadromous fishery resources and the habitats that support them.

The Division:

  • Conserves and restores coastal estuarine and riverine habitats.

  • Conducts field work and extensive interagency coordination to ensure that measures to mitigate damage, prevent adverse impact, and enhance fishery resources are scientifically sound. Typical project situations include U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ section 10 and 404 permits; Environmental Protection Agency effluent permits; Federal Energy Regulatory Commission projects; and Coastal America projects.

  • Provides formal mitigation recommendations for input through the National Environmental Policy Act.

  • Consults with Federal and State agencies to avoid, minimize, or mitigate adverse impacts to essential fish habitats.
