A Suomi NPP satellite pass captured the smoke plumes emanating from fires across the Western U.S. on August 14th, 2012. A high concentration of fires can be seen in Idaho, though smoke from other fires in Oregon, Washington, and Montana are also visible - as are the shrouds of haze blanketing the region as heavy winds spread the smoke through the atmosphere.
A close-up image of the Idaho fires using the high resolution infrared and visible bands on Suomi NPP VIIRS sensor shows even more detail of the hot spots and smoke plumes.
