Capt. Doug Marble
Assistant Chief of Naval Research

Capt. Doug Marble graduated in 1986 from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Oceanography, receiving his commission through the Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

After completing Surface Warfare Officers' School in Newport, R.I., he reported to USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) qualifying as Engineering Officer of the Watch and Surface Warfare Officer and serving as Boilers, Auxiliaries and Combat Information Center Officer.

In 1989, he became a Naval Oceanographer under the Oceanography Option program and assumed duties as Executive Officer, Oceanographic Unit FIVE, embarked in USNS Harkness (T-AGS 32).  After 16 months of hydrographic survey in Indonesian waters, he reported to Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., earning a master’s degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. 

In 1993, he reported as Officer in Charge, Mobile Environmental Team, Yokosuka, Japan.  While in Japan, he also served as Executive Officer, U. S. Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Facility, Yokosuka.

In 1995, he reported to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) as ship's meteorology and oceanography officer and completed a 12-month dry-docking overhaul and an Arabian Gulf deployment in support of Operation Southern Watch.  Capt. Marble returned to the Naval Postgraduate School in 1998 under the Naval Doctoral Studies program, earning a doctorate degree in Physical Oceanography.

In October 2001, Capt. Marble reported to Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (METOC), Monterey, where he served as Web Integration Department Head and METOC Open Services Architecture Project Manager. 

He reported onboard Naval Atlantic Meteorology and Oceanography Center, Norfolk, Va., as Executive Officer in September 2004.  In January 2005, he became the first commanding officer of the Naval Aviation Forecast Center.

In July 2006, he reported to the Office of Naval Research Physical Oceanography Program.  In July 2008, he assumed duties as Deputy Director, Ocean Battlespace Sensing Science and Technology Department; and Director, Ocean Sensing and Systems Applications Division.  

Capt. Marble assumed duties as the Assistant Chief of Naval Research in October 2010.
