Large Vessel Interface Lift-on/Lift-off (LVI Lo/Lo) crane

Caption: YORKTOWN, Va. (Nov. 19, 2009) A Large Vessel Interface Lift-on/Lift-off (LVI Lo/Lo) crane, funded by the Office of Naval Research, demonstrates container transfers aboard the Military Sealift Command auxiliary crane ship USNS Flickertail State (T-ACS-5) at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex. The LVI Lo/Lo crane enables the rapid and safe transfer of standard ISO containers and other heavy loads at sea.

Hull Bug

Caption: WASHINGTON (June 21, 2009) The Robotic Hull Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming tool, or HULL BUG, is being tested by the Office of Naval Research as a hull-cleaning device. The HULL BUG is similar in concept to an autonomous robotic home vacuum cleaner and uses a biofilm detector to differentiate between the clean and unclean surfaces on the hull of a ship.

Secretary of the Navy Honors Drs. Jerome and Isabella Karle for Service

Caption: WASHINGTON (July 21, 2009) Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus gives his remarks at Drs. Jerome and Isabella Karle's retirement ceremony from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) following a combined 127 years of government service. Among their many awards and honors, Dr. Jerome Karle's work in crystal structure analysis was recognized by the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Dr. Isabella Karle was awarded the National Medal of Science from President Clinton in 1995 for her pioneering work in devising methods to determine crystal structure.

ONR Battery Technology Extends Life of Bomb Disposal Robots

Caption: ARLINGTON, Va. (May 28, 2009) Master Chief Steve French and Laura Smith operate a Talon EOD robot during an Office of Naval Research Technical Solutions demonstration of the recently completed battery replacement project. The battery replacement project was prompted by a request from the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 8th Engineering Battalion and resulted in a solution provided by Penn State University's Applied Research Laboratory that utilizes standard military batteries.

Exhibitor Demonstrates Thermal Racer at Fleet Week 2009 in New York City.

Caption: NEW YORK (May 25, 2009) Reja Amatya, left, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, uses a thermal racer to demonstrate how you can create electrical power using thermoelectric material and a difference in temperature at the Office of Naval Research exhibit during Fleet Week New York City 2009. Benefits of thermal management to the Navy include energy harvesting, waste heat recuperation and possible primary power generation.
