We recommend that SIP applicants apply to multiple summer programs or consider multiple summer opportunities.  We have listed summer opportunities outside the NIH below.  Appearance of programs on this list does not mean that the NIH recommends the programs.

Colorado Biomedical Informatics Summer Training Fellowship

The Colorado Biomedical Informatics Summer Training Fellowship Program will introduce upper level undergraduate and/or first year graduate students to Ph.D. level research career opportunities in Biomedical Informatics.  The application deadline is February 15, 2013.

MIDAS (Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study) Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The University of Pittsburgh Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) National Center of Excellence is pleased to announce a summer research opportunity for undergraduate students in the field of computational modeling and simulation of infectious diseases. Through this ten-week Summer Research Program, participants will gain an appreciation of major research questions being raised at the intersection of public health, biological science, and computer technology and become acclimated to the rigors of scientific research and graduate education. Women and underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

AGA Investing in the Future Student Research Fellowship

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Research Foundation is offering 10 summer fellowship awards of $5,000 each to stimulate interest in digestive disease and nutrition-related research among underrepresented minority students. Highly qualified students will have the opportunity to work with top investigators in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. The application deadline is Feb. 15.

The CLIMB UP (Undergraduate Program) for Summer Research

The CLIMB Undergraduate Program for Summer Research is an opportunity for undergraduate students to perform research and gain understanding of graduate career opportunities at the University of Buffalo.

Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences for Undergraduates

The Building Diversity in Biomedical Sciences (BDBS) Program provides a mentored, 10-week research intensive experience at Tufts University for undergraduates who are interested in pursuing PhD or MD/PhD training upon completion of the baccalaureate degree.

Center for Causal Consequences of Variation Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program

The Church Lab (Department of Genetics) at Harvard Medical School is offering paid, 10-week summer undergraduate research internships for underrepresented students interested in research careers in genome sciences.

Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program

This program provides an opportunity for U.S. undergraduates to conduct research at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.

Summer Engineering Seminar

Santa Clara University offers two five-day sessions to expose high school students to engineering.

Harvard Summer Program in Epidemiology

This program, which is for college students from groups underrepresented (broadly construed) in biomedical research, is offered by the Harvard School of Public Health.

The Maternal and Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (MCHC/RISE-UP Program

This program provides opportunities for enhanced public health and related training to undergraduate students from underrepresented populations.  The program takes place at three sites, one each at Johns Hopkins University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Southern California.

Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) for high school girls

This program is open to girls of all nationalities.  There is a charge, but some financial aid is available. 

Amgen Scholars

This program supports summer research experiences for undergraduates at universities, both in the US and abroad.  Applications are handled by the universities, and the application deadlines are generally in early February.

American Physiological Society Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowships

The APS funds up to 24 fellowships that permit undergraduates to conduct full time research working with an established investigator.  A stipend is provided and travel funds are available.

AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program

The program seeks to increase communication skills in student scientists as they not only become more adept at describing scientific concepts to the journalism community, but also better equipped to engage the public about the impact of their work. The fellowship places 10 to 15 senior undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate science and engineering students at media sites nationwide to work as summer science reporters for 10 weeks. Past sites have included the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and NPR. An eligible applicant's field of study must be in the natural, physical, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences, or mathematics.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program [SURP] at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center [FHCRC] is an intensive, nine-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students who are interested in biological research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will complete an independent research project and present their findings at a competitive poster session.

alcohol research Training Summer School

A week-long intensive introductory course is followed by an 8-week paid research internship.  Participants spend the first week at Washington University in St. Louis and the internship either at Wash U or the University of Missouri - Columbia. 

Summer Course in Biophysics

This course for college undergraduates includes talks and seminars, mentored lab work, team-building activities, and field trips.  It is held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  All tuition and fees are covered, and a stipend is provided.

Oregon Health & Science University Equity Summer Research Program

An 8 to 10 week summer program for college students interested in medicine, dentistry, and/or research.

Undergraduate summer program at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech

Annual University of Virginia Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP)

Ten-week summer research internships are available for qualified undergraduates considering a career in biomedical research. A generous stipend, round-trip travel, and housing are provided to participants. 

Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Deerfield Illinois

Summer internships in a large number of areas related to the pharmaceutical industry are available to college or graduate students.

Bio-Rad Summer Internships in the U.S.

Ten-week internships for individuals who have completed their sophomore or junior year in college in areas ranging from bioscience research to marketing and human resources.  Applications are submitted directly online.

Rand Corporation Graduate Student Summer Associate Program

This twelve-week program is for those who have completed at least two years of study leading to a PhD or professional doctoral degree.  U.S. citizenship is not required.  Rand Corporation conducts research on a wide range of national security problems and domestic and international social policy issues.

Summer Student Volunteer Program at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy

Opportunities in a variety of areas for college students who are U.S. citizens.

Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health

For college undergraduates who would like to learn how quantitative methods can be applied in the study of human health.

SURF, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

These positions are at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO.

Riken Brain Science Institute Summer Program

Opportunities for advanced trainees to complete either a two-month laboratory internship or a seven-day intensive lecture course just outside Tokyo, Japan.  Funds may be available to support those with financial need. 

University of Maryland School of Public Health Summer Training and Research (STAR) Program

This program is designed to provide traditionally under-represented undergraduate students with 2 consecutive summers of a 10-week research training and career development program to enhance their potential to apply for and complete graduate degrees in biomedical and behavioral science relevant to preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.

The Center for Health Disparities and Molecular Medicine (CHDMM) of Loma Linda University School of Medicine Undergraduate Training Program (UTP)

The UTP is a summer biomedical research internship program for undergraduate students funded by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Naval Research Laboratory Summer Summer Research Program for HBCU/MI/TCU Undergraduates

A ten week (non-biomedical) research program for undergraduates enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities.  Applicants must be US citizens, be fluent in English, and have a GPA of at least 3.0.
