NIH-Wide Efforts
- A three-year pilot “Keep the Thread” accommodation and reentry program, which allows alternative career development schedules for NIH intramural postdocs dealing with personal issues or family responsibilities.
- A new back-up care program to provide care for children, elders, and adult dependents of NIH employees and intramural trainees who find themselves in need of short-term caregiving solutions.
- Modification of the Biographical Sketch in NIH Grant Application Forms to Permit a Description of Factors that may have Resulted in a Hiatus in Training or Reduced Productivity (Research Grants and Fellowships)
- NIH Conference Grant (R13/U13) Application Amended to Require that Applicants Describe Plans to Identify Family Care Resources at the Conference
- Request for Applications for Research on Causal Factors and Interventions that Promote and Support the Careers of Women in Biomedical and Behavioral Research.
- The Parental Leave Policy for the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA) has been extended.
- The NIH Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers, the Office of Research on Women’s Health, and the National Center for Research Resources hosted the Women in Biomedical Research: Best Practices for Sustaining Career Success workshop on March 4, 2008.
- The NIH Working Group on Women in Biomedical Careers and the Office of Research on Women’s Health hosted the National Leadership Workshop on Mentoring Women in Biomedical Careers on November 27–28, 2007.
- The Office of Research on Women’s Health and participating Institutes and Centers clarified the eligibility for Supplements to Promote Reentry into Biomedical and Behavioral Research Careers to include women and men who took a hiatus from research immediately after a postdoctoral appointment.
- A working list of NIH Career Development and Mentoring Programs (PDF, 57 pages) has been created.
- The Office of Extramural Research created a PowerPoint presentation (PDF, 36 pages) that provides information on the involvement of women in NIH Extramural Research, Research Training, and Career Development Programs. - The Office of Extramural Research developed answers to common questions about Policies Related to Parental Leave and Child Care.
- The Postdoctoral Fellows Subcommittee of the Second Task Force on the Status of NIH Intramural Women Scientists published an article in EMBO Reports
