GLOW Gardeners
The summary below was provided by the Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.
GLOW Gardeners Club and Camp will be a way for girls to develop leadership skills while learning valuable lifeskills. GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) is an initiative to inspire leadership skills among girls, which is important in South Africa's male dominant society. By combining GLOW activities with the school's PermaGarden project, Grade 5 and 6 girls will have the opportunity to learn about leaderships, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, good decision making, sustainable gardening practices, and income generation.
The primary school is in an isolated, rural village in the North West Province in South Africa. The school has been maintaining a PermaGarden project since March 2012, primarily through the support of community volunteers, educators, and learners. Gardening is a valuable skill for these girls because fresh food is difficult to find in the village and is often expensive because there are no grocery stores nearby. By learning to garden sustainably, girls can insure their families have a steady source of nutritious food, now and in the future, despite the desert climate. They will also work to develop a product through the garden project, which will be sold at the monthly pension market or in nearby shops. Even though jobs in the village are scarce, the girls will learn how to earn money independently and how to become leading women in the community.
