General Dempsey’s Letter to the Joint Force

Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

It is an honor to be the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  I am thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve with you.

The most important thing I want you to know is that I trust you to do what’s right for each other and for our country.

Thanks for your service.  You have fought harder and your families have sacrificed more than most will ever know.  You make us the finest military on the planet.  We’re powerful, versatile, responsive, and resilient.  We are admired by our allies and partners, and we are dreaded by our enemies.   You are our decisive advantage.

To ensure we remain the Joint Force our nation needs, I’ll focus on a few key themes as I begin my time as Chairman.

We must achieve our national objectives in the current conflicts.  As long as our forces remain in harm’s way, we must ensure they have what they need to succeed.

We must look beyond our current requirements—to 2020—and develop Joint Force 2020 to provide the greatest possible number of options for our nation’s leaders and to ensure our nation remains immune from coercion.  Keeping our military the best led, best trained, and best equipped force in the world is the non-negotiable imperative.  Doing so in a new fiscal environment will be hard, but we’ve overcome similar challenges in our past, and the nation is counting on us to overcome them again.

We must renew our commitment to the Profession of Arms.  We’re not a profession simply because we say we’re a profession.  We must continue to learn, to understand, and to promote the knowledge, skills, attributes, and behaviors that define us as a profession.

And, of course, we must keep faith with our Military Family.  Our active, guard and reserve service members, our wounded warriors, our families, and our veterans deserve the future they have sacrificed to secure.

Continue mission!  I am proud to serve with you.

    I want to start off by stating
    that I am a very proud Navy wife. My husband severed 5 years active duty,
    joining at the age of 17 the Navy made him a man after a couple years. It was
    rough on him at first he got in a little bit of trouble and then it hit him. He
    was a proud Navy Sailor and a new husband with a fast growing family.  As I am sure a lot of Sailor’s start off this
    way. After 5 years and never being a part of the adult civilian world he
    thought he would try it. As a proud Navy wife living on my own mostly since the
    age of sixteen, I wanted him to stay in. I respected his decision and I gave
    him two months to realize he made a mistake. It took 6 weeks. With the Ban on
    that prior service members can’t return active duty he like many others joined
    the reserves. After 9 years of being loyal to his country and being a Navy
    family we are unhappy not being a part of this world we love. We are truly a
    Navy Family, the Navy is a huge part of our lives and there is a big part of us
    that is empty. His reserve unit is 2.5 hours away from us and we (my kids and
    I) really aren’t included in anything other than a family weekend once a year.

    The purpose of this letter is
    that my husband LS2 (SCW) Kovas is an exceptional sailor. He is the PT leader;
    he instructs most of the classes, in charge of all vehicles, recalls, and whatever
    else he gets his hands on. He works more than just regular drills for the Navy he
    does training, gets certified and I am not even sure how many licenses he has
    to drive different types of heavy equipment. Wearing this uniform every day for
    all of these years still makes him proud and fully charged. I can’t find the
    words to describe it well. His day job is working for a DoD contractor but it’s not close to putting that uniform on going to
    work every day. He would to change rates if needed to get back in, we have
    looked into FTS programs, and they are hard to come by. So please, is there
    anything else we could do to once again become a fulltime military family? He
    is 28 yrs. old and plans on retiring through the service he still has so much
    left in him he and I would rather have people fighting for our country that
    want to be there rather than those that don’t. Thank you for your time and
