Maria Reed is the Deputy Director for Operations of the Children and Adults Health Programs Group (CAHPG) at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) at the Department of Health and Human Services.  Maria oversees CMS’ work on eligibility, enrollment, and quality of care for children and adults served by Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.  In this capacity, she is managing group operations for the implementation of major provisions of the Affordable Care Act, including the expansion of Medicaid coverage to low-income adults as well as the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act.  Prior to joining CAHPG, Maria served as Technical Director in the Disabled and Elderly Health Programs Group, partnering with States in implementing Medicaid coverage and benefits policy impacting elderly individuals and individuals with disabilities.  

Maria began her Federal career at the Department of Veterans Affairs where her work included both clinical social work and health care administration, with a primary focus on mental health and substance use disorder treatment.   She has previous clinical, policy, and health care administration experience in both the public and private sectors.  She holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from University of Maryland at Baltimore, a Master’s degree in Dance/Movement Therapy from Goucher College, and a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University.
