Finding Public Information about Individual Banks on the Internet

Public information is available on the federal bank regulators’ Web sites:

• The OCC for national banks and federal savings associations provides information at this site, including these popular items:
  • Corporate applications filed by banks to apply for a national charter; merge with another bank; open, close, or relocate a branch; or to engage in other innovative activities.
  • Evaluations of bank performance under the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).
  • Any enforcement action the OCC imposed or withdrew.
• The OCC also publishes the HelpWithMyBank.gov Web site specifically to assist customers of national banks and federal savings associations.
• Federal Reserve Board for state-chartered banks belonging to the Federal Reserve System and for bank holding companies:
  • National Information Center of Banking Information has balance sheet and income information about banks and bank holding companies. It also has a database that traces the histories of financial institutions. Use the Institution Search to see what happened to your bank.
• Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation for insured state banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System; a good source for statistics.
  • Institution Directory lists the primary regulators of individual banks.
