The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is conducting a national search for a Program Director of Quality of Care Research in the Outcomes Research Branch (ORB) within the Applied Research Program (ARP). The mission of the ORB is to coordinate, conduct, and sponsor research to measure, evaluate, and improve the outcomes of cancer care.

Research supported within the ORB addresses enhancing the state of the science in cancer outcomes measurement, focusing on patient-reported outcomes such as health-related quality of life, symptoms from disease or treatment, patient perceptions of and satisfaction with care, and economic burden, and the application of modern psychometric methods to improve measures. Program responsibilities also include the assessment and evaluation of innovative delivery models, structural measures, and process of care measures that are associated with improved cancer care outcomes. The incumbent is primarily responsible for providing direction and leadership in planning, initiating, coordinating, guiding, and encouraging a program of outcomes and quality of life research in cancer related to the assessment of prevention, early detection, and cancer treatment services (including end-of-life care). The incumbent plans, initiates and manages major extramural research projects related to the measurement and application of outcomes research delivered across the cancer control continuum; and plans, initiates, conducts, and provides collaborative analytic support for research and developmental activities related to monitoring progress in the use of health related quality of life measurement and applications in the United States and internationally. The duties of the incumbent involve a range of analytical research support activities, including the development of research protocols, design and development of survey and data collection instruments, development of methods for data collection, creating, review, and editing analytical data bases, and descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis of quality of life and outcomes data. The successful applicant will be an experienced scientist with a background in health services research and quantitative research methods (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in social science or public health) with interests in developing the outcomes research agenda.
