What We Do
PHMSA's mission is to protect people and the environment from the risks inherent in transportation of hazardous materials by all modes of transportation. PHMSA develops and enforces regulations for the safe, reliable, and environmentally-sound operation of the nation's 2.6 million mile pipeline transportation system and the nearly 1 million daily shipments of hazardous materials by land, sea, and air.

Hazardous materials are vital to the economy, because we depend on them to heat our homes, provide fuel for transportation, and deliver chemicals to enhance food production and medicine for treating illnesses. PHMSA plays an important role by ensuring that hazardous materials are transported safely and efficiently. From requiring freight trains and trucks to display hazmat labels to inspecting underground gas pipelines, PHMSA is working to protect the American public.

PHMSA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation. Learn more about us here.
