The U.S. Department of Transportation spends billions of dollars each year on transportation related projects in the form of contracts and grants to support everything from new construction to rehabilitation of aging infrastructure, and from research to enforcement programs.  These contracts and grants are awarded for projects involving every major mode of transportation impacting virtually every community across the nation. To protect the integrity of these and other transportation related programs against fraud, waste and abuse, investigating contract and grant fraud is one of the Office of Inspector General's (OIG) top priorities.

Common contract and grant fraud investigations involve allegations of bribery and corruption, bid rigging, false claims, labor and materials over-charging, disadvantaged business enterprise fraud, and product substitution.  In addition to conducting investigations, the OIG's Office of Investigations maintains a proactive fraud awareness and education outreach program with stakeholders at all levels of government.
