Democracy Commission Small Grants Program

The purpose of this program is to award small grants for specific projects that support the development of responsible, informed citizenship in Turkmenistan. Primarily, grants will be awarded to initiative groups that operate on a not-for-profit basis.

The Commission is interested in projects related to:

  • community self-help to resolve common problems;
  • information distribution;
  • civic education;
  • respect for the rule of law;
  • the role of women in development;
  • the facilitation of private sector growth, including among student entrepreneurs;
  • the development of professional organizations representing their membership.

The Commission typically funds projects such as training workshops, resource centers and publication of materials. Projects NOT funded by the Commission include those proposed by organizations and individuals outside of Turkmenistan, projects relating to partisan political activity, charitable activity and humanitarian aid, fund-raising campaigns, commercial projects, projects not affiliated with an organization or initiative group that can provide long-term sustainability to the project, and projects that duplicate existing projects.

Proposals will be evaluated according to the topic of the project, clearly formulated goals and target groups, and the ability of the applying organization to carry out the project aims.
