    U.S. Consul General joined hands with leading anti human trafficking NGOs and hundreds of youth volunteers in a series of events last week. The events included panel discussions, poster making, creative arts workshops, anti trafficking march, crafts mela and cultural programs staged at Mohorkunj. Youth volunteers spearheaded this mass awareness program which ended with the screening of excerpts from Nicholas Kristof’s ‘Half the Sky”.

    The American Library, in partnership with Oxford University Press, hosted the book launch for Redeeming Calcutta: A Portrait of India’s Imperial Capital by National Geographic photographer and professor Steve Raymer. Photographers, students of photography clubs and noted Kolkata personalities packed the house and joined in a lively discussion with Mr. Raymer who appeared via Skype to discuss his experience of working in Kolkata and how his book evolved.

    So its Shillong again, for the second consecutive year. Yes friends, Dosser's Urge from Shillong is the winner of Autumn Music Festival 2012. The crowd at Tantra, The Park was spellbound with their stunning music and performance. Monopoly Syndrome from Darjeeling was chosen first runner up and they were great too. Kolkata's own Blitz the band were chosen as the second runner up by the judges-- American Center Deputy Director Rachel Sunden, city musicians Rahul Guha Roy and Neel Adhikari.

    The American Library Kolkata organized a day-long program for over fifty students from five Bangla-medium schools in North Bengal on August 31. The students participated in a Spelling Bee followed by a "KnowledgeUSA quiz", a fun way of testing their knowledge about US history and culture and an educational workshop on making toys using optical illusions.

Explaining his view about how and why the future still belongs to America, the Editor-at-large of American Interest magazine said, “what is unique about the United States is not our problems. Every major country in the world today faces extraordinary challenges—and the 21st century will throw more at us. Yet looking toward the tumultuous century ahead, no country is better positioned to take advantage of the opportunities or manage the dangers than the United States”.
