Trauma, Burn, Peri-Operative Injury, and Wound Healing Research and Training

NIGMS funds research and training programs in trauma, burn, peri-operative injury, and wound healing. The research aims to improve understanding of the biological processes that occur after a traumatic or burn injury, bring basic scientific observations and principles into the clinical arena, and foster interactions and communications within institutions and throughout the trauma and burn community. The research is ultimately aimed at reducing or preventing complications after a traumatic or burn injury.

Specific research areas of interest include:

  • Resuscitation
  • Shock
  • Compensatory mechanisms
  • Microcirculation/blood flow
  • Endogenous factors, including stress hormones, immune system molecules, and neurotransmitters
  • Inflammatory/immune response disorders
  • Infection and sepsis
  • Syndromes involving multiple organ failure
  • Alterations in nutritional requirements after injury
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Artificial skin
  • Ethical, legal and social issues associated with trauma and burn injuries
