ICD-10-CM/PCS Versions of HCUP Tools (Beta)

In preparation for the October 2014 implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS, the diagnosis and procedure tools from HCUP have been converted to the new coding system. This page contains the beta versions of these tools.

Clinical Classification Software (CCS) Program File. The Clinical Classifications Software (CCS) is a tool for clustering patient diagnoses and procedures into a manageable number of clinically meaningful categories. The single-level CCS for diagnoses contains about 260 categories and the single-level CCS for procedures contains 235 categories. (Note that the multi-level CCS could not be converted to ICD-10-CM/PCS because the specificity of the new ICD codes did not match the structure of the multi-level CCS.) See the description of the CCS for more details.

Procedure Classes Program File. The Procedure Classes provide users an easy way to categorize procedure codes into one of four broad categories: Minor Diagnostic, Minor Therapeutic, Major Diagnostic, and Major Therapeutic. See the description of the Procedure Classes for more details.

Chronic Condition Indicator Program File. The Chronic Condition Indicator program provides an easy way for users to categorize ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes into one of two categories: chronic or not chronic. See the description of the Chronic Condition Indicator program for more details.

Comorbidity Software Program File. The Comorbidity Software assigns variables that identify comorbidities in hospital discharge records using ICD diagnosis coding. See the description of the Comorbidity Software for more details.
