Intellectual Property & Inventions

Magnifying glass over a dictionary definition of patents

Common types of intellectual property (IP) include patents (inventions), copyrights, and trademarks.

Intellectual property management is central to the NIH mission. Good intellectual property policy and practice are the bridge that links laboratory bench discoveries to the marketplace.

NCI TTC works closely with the NIH Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) to ensure that bench discoveries are transferred to the marketplace through licensing. Various technology transfer metrics, including information about patents, licenses and CRADAs across NIH are reported by NIH OTT. In order to manage the NCI patent portfolio and gain a better understanding of the demands of industry partners, NCI TTC conducted a study (TTC Licensing Report Adobe PDF Format) that provides insight into the time it takes to license a patent.

Specific NIH technologies are available in Co-Development Opportunities. If you are interested in licensing an NIH technology, visit NIH OTT.
