More Information Needed About PPI Site

ATLANTA — No immediate action is needed to protect people from contaminants from the Papelera Puertorriqueña Inc. site in Utuado, Puerto Rico. More information is needed to determine whether long term exposure to contaminants from the site could harm health. Scientists from the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted a site visit and reviewed available information to determine whether a public health hazard exists. ATSDR plans to review additional information from the Environmental Protection Agency when they complete their investigation.

Papelera Puertorriqueña Inc. is located in downtown Utuado. The site has been used for several manufacturing processes since 1960. Historically, contaminants from this site have reached the Vivi River. The site was declared part of the National Priorities List, or Superfund Program, in April 2009.

ATLANTA – Ninguna acción inmediata es necesaria para proteger a las personas de los contaminantes del sitio Papelera Puertorriqueña Inc. en Utuado, Puerto Rico. Se necesita más información para determinar si la exposición a largo plazo a contaminantes del sitio podría dañar a la salud. Científicos de la Agencia para Sustancias Tóxicas y el Registro de Enfermedades (ATSDR por sus siglas en inglés) realizaron una visita al lugar y examinaron la información disponible para determinar si existe un peligro para la salud pública. La ATSDR planea revisar información adicional de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental una vez ellos completen su investigación.

La Papelera Puertorriqueña Inc. está localizada en el centro de Utuado. El sitio ha sido utilizado para varios procesos de manufactura desde el 1960. Históricamente, los contaminantes de este sitio han llegado al río Vivi. El sitio fue declarado como parte de la Lista de Prioridades Nacionales, o Programa de Superfondo, en abril del 2009.

Papelera Puertorriqueña, Inc. (PPI) is a paper and plastic bag manufacturer in Utuado, Puerto Rico. The PPI factory is on a steep embankment within 40 feet of the Vivi River. PPI has been at this location since 1965. It makes bags for coffee, bakery products, rice, and supermarkets. It also makes cardboard containers such as pizza boxes. PPI also stores and distributes other paper-based products such as greeting cards and gift wraps. PPI uses inks and solvents in its manufacturing process.
