Tim Cross

Deputy Inspector General

The Deputy Inspector General assists the Inspector General in providing leadership and direction for the activities and staff of the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The Deputy is responsible for the management operations of the office, including direct supervision of staff performing IT, personnel, budget, and administrative functions, as well as special projects. He represents OIG on National Science Foundation committees and on interagency groups, including those serving the federal Inspector General community.

Tim Cross assumed his duties as Deputy Inspector General in December 2000. He earned an M.B.A from Stanford University, an M.A. in Criminology from the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.A. in Social Sciences with honors from Harvard University.

Mr. Cross has over 25 years of experience in managing policy analysis and oversight staffs at four federal agencies. He came to the NSF OIG after serving as an Assistant Inspector General at the Small Business Administration, where he developed and ran a new Inspection and Evaluation Division. Prior to that, he was Chief of the Coordination Division in a crisis management office at Department of State and, previously, Director of the Criminal Division’s policy analysis office at the Department of Justice.
