The training serves to walk participants through the audit peer review guidelines. Those involved in conducting peer reviews or receiving peer reviews during the next cycle have priority for training. The FAEC webpage contains information on the audit peer review schedule and audit peer review guidelines. I&E External Peer Review Training for the pilot CIGIE I&E external peer review project coincides with the next scheduled round of peer reviews. The half-day workshop is designed for those directly involved in either conducting or receiving an I&E external peer review in the spring of 2013. As such, enrollment will only be offered to I&E employees in those groups. The training explores the benefits and potential outcomes of conducting external peer reviews for I&E units, as well as explain how the external peer review process will work. This course is offered as a collaborative effort among the AI&E Academy, the Leadership and Mission Support (LMS) Academy, and the Council of Counsels to the IGs. This 1-day course includes an overview of the legal authorities that created the federal Offices of Inspector General, assigned them mandatory obligations, and provided discretionary authority to carry out their assigned mission. The training focuses on the Inspector General Act of 1978 with its subsequent amendments, including the Reform Act of 2008 which created CIGIE. The Introductory Auditor course provides an overview of auditing in the federal government to new auditors within the CIGIE community. The 2-week class exposes entry-level IG auditors to generally accepted government auditing standards and skill sets including planning, collecting evidence, interviewing, documenting work, communicating results, and writing reports. In response to the CIGIE Investigations Committee Suspension and Debarment Working Group’s 2011 report, Don't Let the Toolbox Rust: Observations on Suspension and Debarment, Debunking Myths, and Suggested Practices for Offices of Inspectors General, this course is designed to raise awareness of suspension and debarment within the audit, I&E, and attorney communities. The course demonstrates how audit, inspection, and evaluation work can produce and support suspension and debarment actions, and offers practical suggestions and techniques for increasing OIG pursuit of these administrative remedies. Working with Auditors, Inspectors, and Evaluators This 1-day workshop is a collaborative effort between the AI&E Academy and the LMS Academy. The course is designed to familiarize non-auditor and non-inspector/evaluator CIGIE professionals with the standards and processes used by the audit and I&E communities in conducting their IG work. Specifically, the workshop provides an overview of Government Auditing Standards (Yellow Book) and CIGIE’s Quality Standards for Inspection and Evaluation (Blue Book) for those who work with auditors and inspectors/evaluators. Writing Pilots for Auditors, Inspectors and Evaluators The Academy will pilot three writing courses in fiscal year 2013 for auditors, inspectors and evaluators. The courses are designed to help auditors, inspectors, and evaluators write clear, concise, and persuasive reports. The 2-day “Write to the Point” for inspectors and evaluators covers such topics as knowing your audience, writing structure, writing effective paragraphs and sentences, and reviewing your draft. The 2-day “Writing Better, Writing Smarter” for auditors covers topics such as writing for your readers, use of paragraphs, proper use of technical language, use of words, effective revisions, and getting to a good first draft. The 2-day “Writing Solutions” for auditors, inspectors and evaluators course covers topics such as the writing process, writer’s block, writing techniques, editing, writing mechanics, and grammar. This workshop, presented in partnership with GAO, provides an overview of the December 2011 updates to the Government Auditing Standards (Yellow Book). All auditors need to be aware of these revisions in conducting their work.
