Service-learning programs can offer parents and families the opportunity to participate in innovative learning experiences, and to become engaged in their children’s schools in unique ways. Research shows that service-learning affects students in many positive ways, such as:

  • Strong achievement, including higher grades and test scores;
  • Better school attendance;
  • Better behavior and more positive attitudes; and
  • Higher graduation rates.

Becoming actively involved in your children’s education shows that you value learning and good character, set high expectations, are informed about your children’s progress, and pay attention to their activities. And parents who maintain strong relationships with their children’s schools benefit as well.

Service-learning programs help you develop better ways of communicating with and understanding your children. At the same time, you may benefit from increased involvement in your school and community. And, as a parent, you have much to give, from providing transportation to offering your own unique skills, knowledge, and support.

Scholarships & Recognition for Student Service

Students across the nation are meeting challenges in their communities, demonstrating compassion for others and offering service to those who need assistance. In addition to the many things you'll learn and the accomplishment, satisfaction and pride that you'll feel when you work in service to your community, there are also tangible rewards for your participation.

Spirit of Service Awards

Learn and Serve America and the Corporation for National and Community Service are committed to recognizing and celebrating outstanding leaders and practices in service-learning. The Spirit of Service Awards pay tribute to the most outstanding participants in each of the Corporation's programs, which also include Senior Corps and AmeriCorps.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award

The President’s Volunteer Service Award was created to recognize the tens of millions of Americans who have made a sustained commitment to volunteer service. This Presidential recognition program honors Americans of all ages who contribute a significant amount of time to volunteer service.

President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll

The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, annually recognizes institutions of higher education for their commitment to and achievement in community service. The President’s Honor Roll increases the public’s awareness of the contributions that colleges and their students make to local communities and the nation as a whole. President Obama has pledged to make service a central cause of his administration and wishes to commemorate the significant role that higher institutions, their students, staff, and faculty play in helping to solve pressing social problems in the nation’s communities.

Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

Through AmeriCorps, upon successful completion of service in AmeriCorps, individuals can earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used to pay for college or repay eligible student loans.

Presidential Freedom Scholarship Program

The Presidential Freedom Scholarship Program promoted student service and civic engagement. These scholarships, funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, recognized high school students for outstanding leadership in service to their community and neighbors.

This program accepted its last application in 2007
and is no longer accepting applications.

All students who have earned a Presidential Freedom Scholarship have up to seven years from the date of the Scholarship award to claim their funds. To receive instructions on how to claim their Presidential Freedom Scholarship, students should send email or any questions to PFS@cns.gov.
