Form or Group View in RxNorm Graph

A view menu was added to allow the user to display the RxNorm graph in either a Group View or a Form View.

menu containing group view and form view options

When Group View is selected, the clinical dose form groups (SCDG), branded dose form groups (SBDG) and dose form groups (DFG) are displayed in the graph. The Group View is the default view. The Form View displays the clinical dose forms (SCDF), branded dose forms (SBDF) and dose forms (DF) in the graph.

When users search for a term which would not be displayed in the current view, RxNav informs the user that the current view will be switched, and after acknowledgement switches the view. For example, if the RxNorm graph is displaying the Group View and the user searches for morphine oral tablet (an SCDF term), a popup window will inform the user that the graph will be switched to Form View. After the user clicks the Ok button the Form View will be displayed.

The following updates were made on January 11, 2012

New Term Types in the RxNorm Graph

The boxes in the RxNorm Graph labelled "Clinical Dose Form", "Branded Dose Form" and "Dose Form" have been replaced by "Clinical Dose Form Group", "Branded Dose Form Group" and "Dose Form Group" respectively, which represent term types (TTY) recently introduced in the RxNorm data set.

Drug attributes added in the RxNorm Graph

Three new drug attributes are now displayed for concepts in the RxNorm Graph: The icon Human and Vererinary Drug Icon denotes a drug that is both a human and veterinary drug.

A dropdown list of filters was added to the RxNorm Graph display. These filters allow the user to display only the concepts which contain the filter values. Selection of more than one filter means that the displayed concepts contain all the filter conditions.

This message will be displayed when the user is searching by RxCUI and enters an RxCUI that has been remapped. The figure below shows an example of the popup message when the user searches for RxCUI 91919. Once the user acknowledges the popup message then the remapped data is displayed.

Remap notification image which says Selected RXCUI=91919 is obsolete and has been remapped into a new concept, RXCUI=849580. Remapped data will be displayed.

The following update was made on September 15, 2010:

Search Term Displayed First

A change was made to display the concept string associated with the search as the first entry in the appropriate table. For example, if the search string is "codeine", then "codeine" is listed first in the ingredient table followed by the multiple ingredient strings containing codeine. Previously, the table was alphabetically sorted.

BPCK Names in Autosuggest List

Branded Pack (BPCK) names have been added to the autosuggestion list.

The following updates were made on or before February 17, 2009:

RxNorm Version

RxNav displays the version of the RxNorm Data Set when the user positions the mouse over the RxNav icon. The version contains either one or two dates. The first (or only) date is the date of the last monthly release. The second date if present indicates the date of the last weekly release installed.

Autosuggest Feature

RxNav will now display a list of suggested terms in a popup window beneath the search string box. The suggested terms are ingredients or brand names and will be displayed after at least four characters are entered in the search string box. The user can then select an entry from the list using either the mouse or the up/down arrow keys or can continue typing in the search string box.

SPL Search

A search has been added based on the FDA Structured Product Labels. To use, select "SPL" in the "Search By:" box and enter the identifier in the search field box.

Multum Identifier Search

A search has been added based on Multum MediSource Lexicon identifiers. The identifiers use the Term type and numeric code. For example: "CD1001". To use, select "MMSL_CODE" in the "Search By:" box and enter the identifier in the search field box.

Multiple Ingredient Search

A new feature to allow users to search on multiple ingredients has been added. To do this, type the ingredient names separated by plus (+) signs in the search field. For example, "acetaminophen + aspirin". RxNav will display all brands which contain at least all of the specified ingredients. Each ingredient will be checked separately for spelling, and alternate suggestions, if any, will be given.

Alternatively, when searching by RXCUI, multiple RXCUIs can be specified in the search field. For example, "161 + 1191" will display all the brands containing aspirin and acetaminophen.

GPCK data

The GPCK data is displayed in the table labeled "Clinical Drug or Pack". To distinguish the GPCK data from the Clinical Drug data, the GPCK data is shaded gray and starts with a double diamond symbol Double diamond image.

Example of GPCK terms in Clinical Drug or Pack table

BPCK data

The BPCK data is displayed in the table labeled "Branded Drug or Pack". To distinguish the BPCK data from the Branded Drug data, the BPCK data is shaded gray and starts with a double diamond symbol Double diamond image.
