OBJECTIVES/DESCRIPTION OF CLERKSHIP:

The pediatric clerkship offers medical students a challenging opportunity to develop clinical skills and knowledge in the care of the pediatric patient. The Rotation is divided between the Outpatient Clinic and Inpatient Services (Ward and Nursery). Students will have the opportunity to participate in direct clinical care in each setting while working and precepting with our Peds staff. The Pediatric Clinic offers subspecialty clinic opportunities in Developmental Pediatrics, Cardiology, Pulmonolgy, and Premature Infant Clinic. The standard curriculum is a 2 week rotation on the Pediatric Ward, 1 to 2 weeks in the Nursery, and the remainder of the rotation is in the Pediatric Clinic. Students do have the opportunity to rotate through the NICU if they are interested. There is flexibility to the rotation schedule as we attempt to ensure a varied experience while keeping in mind the interests of the student. Students are expected to work 5 days a week while weekend time and call requirements are determined by the respective school.

Students will participate in twice weekly morning report, and are expected to present at least 2 patient cases for morning report. Students will attend the weekly GME lecture series which covers common pediatric and neonatal topics. Students are afforded the opportunity to attend CME lectures provided at WAMC as time permits on service.

Our Pediatric Service provides ample opportunity to work with patients as we see approximately 2000 clinic visits a month, over 260 admissions to the Newborn Nursery, and admit approximately 30-50 Ward patients a month. We also provide a nice mix of healthy well children and more complex medically ill children.
