Womack Family Medicine Residency Clinic History

The Family Practice Residency is a three year program offered to physicians who desire the broad clinical training necessary for a career in Family Practice. Upon completion of the competency-based program, the physician is eligible to take the specialty board examination in Family Practice, and is fully trained for the diverse roles and responsibilities of military Family Physicians.

Family Practice is the only physician training program in the Medical Center; the residents assume the role of primary physician on nearly all rotations. This, combined with the large population base, make Womack the ideal hands-on environment to train Primary Care Providers. Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, and 18D (Special Forces Medic) students train alongside the residents, preparing our residents for their future leadership role in the military health care system.

In October 1997 the residency was accredited for a full five years by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the longest possible period before mandatory review. There are ten residents in each year group:
  • Two, two week Night Float blocks each year
  • Non-Float Calls – Average:
  • First Year Three per month
  • Second Year Two per month
  • Third Year One per month
  • FP Clinic Schedule
  • First Year One half-day each week
  • Second Year Three half-days each week
  • Third Year Five half-days each week

Military Unique Curriculum
Womack Army Medical Center prides itself on its close relationship with the units on Fort Bragg, the home of the Airborne. In order to develop the next generation of soldier/physician/leaders, the residency includes Officer Professional Development activities and offers a Command rotation. Agreements with Special Operations Command, 82D Airborne Division and 44th Medical Brigade enable our residents to do operational and tropical medicine electives in Africa, Central and South America, and participate in field training exercises and airborne operations at the Joint Readiness Training Center. EFMB qualification is offered twice yearly.

Family Practice Clinic
The Family Practice Clinic is located on the first floor of the Outpatient Clinic wing of the new hospital. It is one of the four Family Practice clinics that serve as the cornerstones for the Fort Bragg health care system.

The clinic has an area of about 20,000 square feet, and includes 65 examination rooms and offices, obstetric monitoring, ultrasound, ENT, minor surgery, sigmoidoscopy and colposcopy suites, an emergency treatment room, and two conference rooms. Each room has a hospital information network station, and digital radiology workstations are placed throughout the clinic. Laboratory and radiology facilities are within a two minute walk in the hospital. The Family Practice Clinic provides care for over 20,000 active duty and retired service members and their families.

The New Hospital
The majority of the clinical experiences are provided at the new Womack Army Medical Center. All of the medical and surgical specialties and many subspecialties are represented.

The hospital serves a TRICARE Prime enrollment population of approximately 115,000, averages a daily census of 100, and over 250 deliveries per month. To see more of its capabilities visit the WAMC homepage

Fort Bragg and Fayetteville
Fort Bragg and Fayetteville together make up the fourth largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. Like most military installations of this size, there are a wealth of support services and recreational activities available here. Students attend schools on post through grade nine, and area universities offer numerous bachelors and masters degree programs. Learn more about post resources at http://www.bragg.army.mil*.

Fayetteville offers minor league sports teams, live theatre, microbreweries, and a one million square foot shopping mall. Amtrak serves the city for rail travel, and a municipal airport provides both direct and connecting flights. Visit the city at http://www.ci.fayetteville.nc.us/*.

The climate of the Sand Hills is ideal for outdoor activities for the entire family. The beaches are two hours away by car, while Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and the world-renowned golf courses of Pinehurst are each about an hour away.
