Investigation Update: Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium Infections, 2008–2009 - CDC - Jan. 26
CDC continues to collaborate with public health officials in many states and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a multistate outbreak of human infections due to Salmonella serotype Typhimurium. As of January 26, 2009, the case count is 501 in 43 states plus and one case in Canada.

Maine Firm Recalls Frozen, Stuffed Chicken Products That May Contain Foreign Materials - USDA - Jan. 20
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of Barber Foods Company, a Portland, Maine, establishment, is recalling approximately 6,050 pounds of frozen, stuffed chicken carving roast products that may contain foreign materials. The products were produced on Nov. 13, 2008, and were distributed by Market Day® in the Midwest and Eastern United States and by Barber Foods to institutional food service establishments and as samples nationwide.

Stonewall Kitchen Voluntarily Recalls Seven Dessert Sauces - FDA - Jan. 23
As a precautionary measure, Stonewall Kitchen of York, Maine is voluntarily recalling seven dessert sauces because they have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause life-threatening illness or death. Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled. The products were distributed nationwide to consumers through the nine company stores, catalog/Internet sales, and through their wholesale division.

CDC and National Expert Panel Promote Revised Field Triage Guidelines of Trauma Patients - CDC - Jan. 22
Guidelines published in CDC's MMWR Reports and Recommendations are aimed at ensuring that trauma patients with more severe injuries are taken to trauma centers designed to handle such injuries. The recommendations designed to standardize decision-making at the injury scene also offer guidance on new technologies such as vehicle crash notification systems, which alert emergency services that a crash has occurred and automatically summon assistance.

Invasive Haemophilus influenzae Type B Disease in Five Young Children - Minnesota, 2008 - CDC MMWR - Jan. 23
In 2008, five children aged <5 years in Minnesota had invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease; one died. A 2007 recall of certain lots of two Hib-containing vaccines and cessation of production resulted in a nationwide shortage. CDC recommended deferring the routine 12–15 month booster dose for children not at increased risk for Hib but emphasized that all children should complete the primary series. However, primary Hib series coverage in Minnesota was lower in 2008 than coverage in previous years. All children should complete the primary Hib immunization series.

The Ministry of Health in China has reported 3 new cases of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
