Congressional Co-Chairs

The following Senators and Representatives will serve as honorary Congressional Co-Chairs of National Preparedness Month (NPM). Together, they will lead the effort to increase public awareness about the importance of emergency preparedness on Capitol Hill and throughout the country.

These elected officials join President Barack H. Obama in support of this effort:

"Each of us has an important role to play in bolstering our preparedness for disasters of all types -- from cyber incidents and acts of terrorism to tornadoes and flooding. That is why my Administration is pursuing an approach to emergency management that engages the whole community -- from Federal, State, local, and tribal governments to the private sector, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and the general public." - President Obama

The Entire Presidential Proclamation declaring September National Preparedness Month is available here

The Senate passed Senate Resolution 583 - Proclaims September National Preparedness Month. On 9/22/2012 it was passed and agreed to in Senate, without amendment and with a preamble by unanimous consent.

We don’t always know when and where a disaster may strike, but we can take steps today to prepare and help reduce the impact of Mother Nature’s devastating hand.  Be informed and develop a plan this month for you and your family.  The difference between your survival and safety may come down to how well prepared you are for a potential disaster.”

“One of the many valuable lessons learned from the terrorist attacks of 9/11 was the importance of preparedness for an emergency. In the midst of another terrorist attack or a natural disaster, the preparedness of our Nation, states, local communities and each and every citizen, can make a life-saving difference. National Preparedness Month presents an excellent opportunity for all American families to take the time to prepare for an emergency.”

Bennie G. Thompson

The Honorable Bennie G. Thompson
Ranking Member, House Committee on Homeland Security

"National Preparedness Month serves as a reminder that natural and man-made disasters affect people in every corner of the Nation.  As the Federal government continues to assist State, local and tribal governments in developing and practicing their emergency plans, each of us should remember that preparedness – from planning to execution – is meaningless without public involvement.  This month, it is my hope that each of us considers what we need to do to be prepared as well as how we can encourage our families, neighbors and communities to be ready for an emergency or disaster.  I know that by planning and working together, we can overcome any storm."

“National Preparedness Month reminds us about the importance of creating and evaluating emergency response plans.  As we remember the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, it serves as a somber reminder of the need to be prepared for both natural and man-made disasters.  While September is National Preparedness Month, we need to ensure that effective emergency plans are in place all year-round.  Individuals, families, organizations, local, state, and federal officials  are all responsible for being prepared for an emergency.”
