Launched in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers, Get Caught Reading Month (GCR) is a nationwide public service campaign designed to promote and celebrate the joys of reading. To support this celebration the U.S. Government Printing Office offers a wide variety of publications to educate, inspire, spark the imagination, and open the door to a world of opportunities and rewards through reading. Nothing But Praise: A History of the 1321st Engineer General Service Regiment Publisher: Defense Dept., Army, Corps of Engineers, Office of History Description: Tells the story of the training and battlefield experiences of one unit that served in Europe during World War II. Yet, in many ways, the experiences of the 1321st mirrored those of engineer units – both black and white – that served during the war: hard training followed by prolonged deployments overseas. If white general service regiments received little attention, the African American units often toiled in obscurity. This new publication, written by the regiment’s commander and including a diary he kept at the time, not only fills some of the gaps in engineers history, it attests to the crucial roles African American engineers played in the Allied victory in Europe. Year/Pages: 2009: 124 p.; ill. Tip of the Spear: U.S. Army Small Unit Action in Iraq, 2004-2007 Publisher: Defense Dept., Army, Center of Military History Description: CMH Pub 70-113-1. Tells the story of that second and longer campaign of the war in Iraq, it is not a narrative of the overall course of the conflict. Instead, it provides a soldier’s-eye view of the war in the form of detailed accounts of a handful of battles. Each one illustrates the everyday challenges that America’s soldiers face in a difficult struggle against an inventive and often elusive enemy. Weapons, doctrine, and procedures developed to fight a conventional campaign against a similar opposing force had to be adapted to fit a different type of conflict. The U.S. Army’s combat and support forces have shown both resourcefulness and resilience, while leaders and soldiers in the field have demonstrated the same courage as previous generations called upon to sacrifice in the name of freedom.
