In carrying out its mission, the NTP has several goals:

  • Provide evaluations of substances of public health concern
  • Develop and validate improved (sensitive, specific, rapid) testing methods
  • Develop approaches and generate data to strengthen the science base for risk assessment
  • Communicate with all stakeholders including government, industry, academia, the environmental community, and the public

One measure of the public impact of the NTP studies can be seen in the Regulatory Agencies use NTP study data as part of the reliable scientific information used to establish guidelines to protect human health. The Report on Carcinogens is also a NTP mandate to provide a list of all substances which either are known to be or may reasonably be anticipated to be human carcinogens. The NTP Office of Health Assessment and Translation serves as an environmental health resource to the public and regulatory and health agencies by providing technical assessments focused on understanding the potential for adverse effects on human health by agents to which humans are exposed.
