Building Capability for Improvement: Lessons from the Field (Part I)

Event Summary

Creating the capability in our medical centers to continuously improve the quality, safety and value of veteran care is a high priority in the Veterans Health Administration. In 2009, the VHA Office of Systems Redesign awarded 10 grants to medical centers and VISNs to strengthen their improvement capability, followed by 20 additional grants in 2010. Researchers at the Center for Organization, Leadership and Management Research have been following the experiences of the grantees since they began. In this cyber-seminar, we will share lessons from those experiences about the approaches used and progress made together with important leverage points in building that capability and capacity: senior leadership commitment, middle manager and front-line staff engagement, improvement infrastructure, role of training and improvement projects and strategic alignment with organizational priorities.
