Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee
In support of U.S. renewable energy and energy efficiency manufacturers and services providers, the Department of Commerce announces the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee (REEEAC). The REEEAC will provide support on trade issues that will support the international competitiveness of U.S. companies in this expanding sector. ETTAC Soliciting New Members
OEEI is currently soliciting 35 new (or returning) members to the Environmental Technologies Trade Advisory Committee (ETTAC)—the private sector Committee that advises the Secretary of Commerce and agencies of the Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee (TPCC) on federal trade policies and programs concerning the environmental technologies industry.
Private sector companies, trade associations, NGO organizations with experience in exporting the full range of environmental technologies products and services are sought, including experience in the following sectors:
1) Air Pollution Control/Monitoring
2) Analytic Devices and Services
3) Environmental Engineering and Consulting Services
4) Financial Services for the Environmental Sector
5) Process and Prevention Technologies
7) Solid and Hazardous Waste
8) Water and Wastewater Treatment
Members must be US citizens and represent organizations with at least 51% U.S. ownership.

Renewable Energy Market Assessment in Indonesia
Renewable Energy in Indonesia Market Assessment Report Indonesia offers U.S. companies a stable political system, a growing economy, and a significant resource base for renewable energy development. Indonesian President Yudhoyono has committed the country to doubling its renewable energy production from 7% of total production to 15% by 2025, which will require 6.7 GW of new renewable energy. Fortunately, Indonesia offers tremendous opportunities for U.S. renewable energy companies. The country is home to 40% of the world’s known geothermal resource (27 GW of potential) while also offering opportunities in biomass, wind, solar, and hydropower. To download the report click here.
Energy Industry Assessment
The 2010 Energy Industry Assessment in now available on-line. This comprehensive document highlights the U.S. and international energy industry, with a focus on global competitiveness, U.S. energy supply and demand, domestic environment, regulatory issues, non-regulatory issues, and the international trading environment. The specific energy sectors which are profiled in the document include oil, gas, coal, nuclear, biofuels, transmission/distribution/grid, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
December 12-13, 2009: Bright Green Exhibition, Copenhagen, Denmark
For two weeks in December 2009, Denmark will host the United Nations Climate Summit COP 15, an international forum to reach consensus on a new global climate agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. On December 12-13, the Confederation of Danish Industries will host the Bright Green Exhibition. December 7-10, 2009: PowerGen International Conference
ITA energy trade specialists coordinated over 400 buyer delegates representing twenty-seven countries to attend the 2009 PowerGen International Conference, which took place in Las Vegas from December 7-10. As part of the ITA Program, MAS-OEEI coordinated the December 9 Power Generation Industry Briefing. Representatives from Babcock & Wilcox, General Electric, and the American Wind Energy Association provided overviews on U.S. technologies for nuclear power, clean coal technology, and wind power. The 2010 PowerGen International Conference will take place from December 14-16 in Orlando.
November 16, 2009: ITA Touts Civil Nuclear Trade Initiative at American Nuclear Society Winter Meeting
More than thirteen hundred firms from across the U.S. and around the world participated in the November 16 American Nuclear Society (ANS) Winter Meeting. Many were on hand to learn about the International Trade Administration’s (ITA) Civil Nuclear Trade Initiative from Mary Saunders, Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Manufacturing and Services. November 13, 2009: Global Smart Energy Forum in Monterey, California
In partnership with the International Trade Administration (ITA), the Monterey Bay International Trade Association hosted the Global Smart Energy Forum. The Forum highlighted bilateral trade and investment opportunities available to U.S. firms in the smart and clean energy sector. Energy experts representing the small business sector discussed the business opportunities and challenges that clean tech companies face in the U.S. and abroad in the smart energy industry. Attendees learned about: 1) global trade and investment opportunities in smart grid products and services, 2) the emergence of localized smart microgrids, and 3) the importance of international standards for global energy infrastructure development. October 20, 2009: Energy for Manufacturing Roundtable
The Office of Energy and Environmental Industries hosted a half-day Energy for Manufacturing Roundtable event on October 20. This event was attended by members of the manufacturing sector and energy suppliers to the manufacturing industry. Attendees learned about and discussed the consequences that energy consumption and workforce education have on competitiveness; how energy efficiency models can strengthen competition and innovation; and how energy consumption patterns are spurring greater implementation of industrial energy efficient technologies.

September 21, 2009: Energy Efficiency Road Show in Toledo, Ohio
On September 21, 2009, the Department of Commerce hosted a Forum on Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing at Owens Corning's World Headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. The event focused on identifying the resources available to companies to be more energy efficient. Over 85 people attended the event, which included an afternoon site visit to the Clean and Alternative Energy Incubator at the University of Toledo. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur welcomed the Forum's participants and gave brief introductory remarks. Assistant Secretary of Commerce Mary Saunders moderated the morning panel discussions. September 11, 2009: Smart Grid Seminar
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), $4.7 billion is being made available to smart grid companies through DOE for smart grid investment grants and demonstration projects. An additional $7 billion is being made available from DOC-National Telecommunications and Information Administration and USDA-Rural Utilities Service for broadband deployment, a crucial component for the smart grid system. In addition, DOC-National Institute of Standards and Technology is accelerating the deployment of smart grid interoperability standards, which will enable the integration, effective cooperation, and two-way communication among the many interconnected elements of the electric power grid. On September 11, ITA coordinated the Smart Grid Seminar session, which provides an overview of the current status of smart grid deployment, with insight on opportunities for U.S. SMEs and start-up companies. Representatives from the Modern Grid Strategy Team, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association provided their insight on the smart grid system and opportunities for U.S. SMEs:

September 2009: U.S. Industry Promotion Program at the International Atomic Energy Agency's 53rd General Conference, Vienna, Austria
The U.S. Departments of Commerce, State, and Energy invite you to participate in the second-annual U.S. Industry Promotion Program at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) 53rd General Conference in Vienna, Austria. The General Conference runs from September 14-18, 2009. We anticipate the U.S. Industry Promotion Program will be from September 13-15.

August 9-10, 2009: North American Leaders Summit, Guadalajara, Mexico:
Energy Deliverables
Energy and climate change were important elements of the trilateral discussions at the North American Leaders Summit held in Guadalajara, Mexico, on August 9-10, 2009. Building on the work of the North American Energy Working Group, established in 2001 by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, deliverables announced at the Leaders Summit included carbon capture and storage partnerships, gas flaring reduction strategies, energy efficiency, and North American clean energy cooperation.
July 16, 2009: Outreach to Industry on International Climate Change Negotiations
On July 16, 2009, the U.S. Department of Commerce hosted a half-day briefing for industry participants during which senior U.S. government officials discussed a potential new agreement to be negotiated under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), provided updates on recent developments, and solicited individual input from participants. DOC plans to host events similar to this one in cities across the United States over the next few months including Milwaukee on August 25 and San Francisco on September 10.
June 2, 2009: Industry Briefing on the 37th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Energy Working Group (APEC-EWG)

On June 2, 2009, the International Trade Administration hosted an Industry Briefing on the 37th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Energy Working Group. Senior U.S. government officials briefed the business community on recent developments in APEC regarding energy issues, including the APEC Energy Working Group meeting in Santiago, Chile in April 20-24. The agenda featured key outcomes from the Santiago meeting, U.S. objectives for APEC in 2009, including trade and investment priorities, and a discussion on industry engagement and advancing industry’s priorities in APEC through effective public-private partnerships. Presenters included representatives from the Departments of Commerce, Energy, State and USTR, USTDA and the National Center for APEC. The briefing took place at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C.
May 19-20, 2009: Second Smart Grid Interoperability Standards Interim Roadmap Workshop, National Harbor, Maryland
As part of the Obama Administration’s commitment to moving the nation towards energy independence, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has contracted with the Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. (EPRI) to help it develop an interim “Roadmap” for Smart Grid standards interoperability. To allow various industry stakeholders to provide comments and suggestions to the Roadmap, NIST is organizing second Roadmap Workshop on May 19-20 to review the draft findings and recommendations from the Roadmap. The first Roadmap Workshop was held in Reston, Virginia on April 28-29. Utilities Executive and Technical Staff, Regulators, Vendors, Builders, State and Federal Government Personnel, Consumer Advocates, Engineers, Planners and Integrators are strongly recommended to attend. Both workshops are open to the public and free of charge. Details and registration procedures for the May 19-20 workshop.

ITA hosted an Export Seminar from 10:00-11:00am on April 29 as part of the Coal Prep Conference. Civil Nuclear Exporters Guide
This online guide is designed to help U.S. companies take part in the global nuclear renaissance by exporting their civil nuclear technology overseas. The guide covers the licensing process and provides contacts for the appropriate federal agencies. The Civil Nuclear Exporters Guide represents another achievement for the International Trade Administration's Civil Nuclear Trade Initiative, which was launched in late 2008.
American Reinvestment and Recovery Act Funding for Smart Grid Projects
On April 16, 2009, the Department of Energy issued a Notice of Intent and a draft Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) that lays the groundwork for providing nearly $4 billion in American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds to support smart grid projects. The Notice of Intent was issued for DOE's Smart Grid Investment Grant Program, which will provide grants of $500,000 to $20 million for smart grid technology deployments and grants of $100,000 to $5 million for the deployment of grid monitoring devices. The program will provide matching grants of up to 50% of the project cost, and the total funding for the program is $3.375 billion. In addition, the draft FOA paves the way toward an offer of $615 million to support demonstrations of regional smart grids, utility-scale energy storage systems, and grid monitoring devices. U.S. companies interested in providing comments to the Notice of Intent and the draft FOA (found by searching the public opportunities on FedConnect for reference number DE-FOA-0000036) may do so through May 6. The formal Funding Opportunity Announcement is anticipated for release on or about June 17, 2009.
Renewable Fuel Standard - Lifecycle Analysis
Under the Clean Air Act, as amended by Sections 201, 202, and 210 of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency is required to promulgate regulations implementing changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard program. The revised statutory requirements specify the volumes of cellulosic biofuel, biomass-based diesel, advanced biofuel, and total renewable
fuel that must be used in transportation fuel each year, with the volumes increasing over time. The revised statutory requirements also include new definitions and criteria for both renewable fuels and the feedstocks used to produce them, including new greenhouse gas emission thresholds for renewable fuels. For the first time in a regulatory program, an assessment of greenhouse gas emission performance is being utilized to establish those fuels that qualify for the four different renewable fuel standards. As mandated by the revised statutory
requirements, the greenhouse gas emission assessments must evaluate the full lifecycle emission impacts of fuel production including both direct and indirect emissions, including significant emissions from land use changes. For additional details, please refer to:
