USAID partners with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in delivering assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. Across all areas of the development spectrum, their work is invaluable to advancing the Agency's objectives.

The NGO arena includes many types of organizations, all of which share the same characteristic of not being part of a government.  USAID partners with many types of NGOs, including:

  • U.S., Local (indegenous), and International Private Voluntary Organizations (PVOs)
  • Cooperatives
  • U.S., Local (indigenous), and International Not-For-Profit Organizations
  • U.S., Local (indigenous), and International For-Profit Organizations
  • Private and Public Foundations
  • Private Educational Institutions

Partnerships are established by both USAID’s missions throughout the developing world and by USAID/Washington.  For example:

  • Immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, ACDI/VOCA worked with Haiti’s Bureau de Développement et Nutrition to distribute food to people in Port-au-Prince and the Southeast Department with funding from USAID, to provide food aid to orphanages, among other activities.
  • In the Philippines, the Microenterprise Access to Banking Services-4 (MABS-4) Program assists rural banks in developing the capability to profitably provide a range of financial services to microentrepreneurs, small farmers and other households.
  • In Namibia, USAID's Civil Society Development Program works to strengthen civil society by improving the managerial and advocacy capabilities of NGOs in Namibia's 13 regions and, thereby, help to deepen the roots of democracy.

USAID provides support for the critical work that NGOs do through Assistance mechanisms such as Cooperative Agreements and Grants and through Acquisition of services via contracts or purchase orders.  Information about partnership solicitations is announced on www.fedbizopps.gov and www.grants.gov
