Specialty Service Fellowships

There are several Fellowships available within the Department of Laboratory Medicine.

Chemistry Fellowship Program

Overview
The Clinical Chemistry Service at NIH offers a 2-year Research Fellowship in Clinical Chemistry for MDs and PhDs with previous training in clinical chemistry, clinical pathology, medicine, or relevant sciences (e.g., biotechnology). Accordingly, fellows may enter the program through either the service pathway (preferred!) or research pathway. In the service pathway, fellows obtain in-depth experience in clinical chemistry, laboratory management and research/method development. In the research pathway, the training is limited to clinical laboratory diagnostics focused on translational and/or collaborative research. The Clinical Chemistry Service provides chemical diagnostic testing for both inpatients and outpatients in the NIH Clinical Center. The senior staff is composed of 4 individuals with MD and/or PhD degrees. From a menu of ~170 different tests, approximately 180,000 tests are performed per month by a technical staff of 43 medical technologists.

Application Information
Qualified candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. Preference is given to individuals who are at least 2 years beyond the doctoral degree, and who have obtained training and are board certified or board eligible in clinical pathology, internal medicine, pediatrics, or clinical chemistry. Usually there is one position available each year beginning on July 1. Applications are closed on October 1 for the position that is available beginning July 1 of the following year. The expected length of the program is 2 years.

Microbiology Fellowship Program

A two-year training program is offered to Ph.D.s and M.D.s. This is a postgraduate residency program in medical and public health laboratory microbiology accredited by the Committee on Postgraduate Educational Programs (CPEP) of the American Academy of Microbiology. The program is designed to develop knowledge and skill in diagnostic microbiology, clinical consultation related to microbiology and infectious diseases, and clinical laboratory management. A strong emphasis is also placed on laboratory research, particularly on the development of new diagnostic tests and on collaborative projects performed in conjunction with clinical protocols ongoing at the NIH. Individuals appropriate for the program are:

  • those interested in gaining knowledge and experience to help them in managing a clinical microbiology laboratory.
  • individuals with a microbiology research background who are interested in applying modern research technology to enhance diagnostic laboratory procedures.

Successful completion of the fellowship program will allow the candidate to seek certification via the American Board of Medical Microbiology and successful completion of this process qualifies the candidate to serve as a medical director for medical microbiology, mycology, parasitology or virology under CLIA88.
