Implementation Projects

Implementation projects are used to apply an intervention in a community at large and measure the public health impact. The emphasis is on the external validity of the intervention, or whether or not the intervention can be used and is effective when implemented by others. This phase also involves quality control measures and determines if the intervention is being implemented as designed.

  • Evaluating a Decision Aid for Breast Cancer Prevention
    National Cancer Institute (NCI)
There have been significant advances in options for breast cancer prevention methods, but these methods remain underused, resulting in avoidable morbidity and mortality. This study uses a decision aid, a tool that helps patients with their medical choices, in the primary care setting to facilitate the use of patient-centered and evidence-based breast cancer prevention.

  • Disseminating Evidence-Based Interventions to Control Cancer
    National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Evidence-based programs and policies can result in population-level reductions in premature cancer morbidity and mortality. Among real world public health audiences, there is limited knowledge regarding effective approaches for dissemination of research-tested interventions. The goal of this project is to increase the dissemination of evidence-based programs and policies to control cancer.

  • Knowledge Integration in Quitlines: Networks that Improve Smoking Cessation
    National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of premature death. While every state and province in the U.S. and Canada have quitlines to help smokers quit, there is little known about the efficiency of the quitlines. This study is designed to analyze the efficiency of a network of telephone quitlines. The results could lead to implementation of new practices, potentially preventing more tobacco-related deaths.

  • The Community Youth Development Study
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
Communities that Care is a coalition-based prevention program run by the U.S. Government that targets youth problem behaviors. This study is designed to examine if communites that employ the Communities That Care prevention planning system are effective in reducing rates of adolescent drug use, delinquency, violence, and risky sexual behavior.

  • Prevention of Dental Disease in Early Head Start Children
National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR)
Low-income children face a number of barriers that prevent them from getting needed dental care and are a high risk for dental disease. This study tests several ways in which increased access to preventive dental services can prevent dental disease in this population.

  • Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)
    National Institute on Aging (NIA)
National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)
    National Eye Institute (NEI)
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that a lifestyle intervention program aimed at weight loss, along with certain medications, can prevent the onset of diabetes over a 10-year period. This study will also examine the impact of diabetes prevention on long-term complications affecting the nervous system and certain organs of the body.
