In September, 2007, the NCI Director asked the DCLG to provide recommendations on how NCI can best involve advocates in NCI activities. The Advocates in Research Working Group (ARWG) was created under the auspices of the DCLG in order to develop recommendations on how NCI can most effectively and consistently engage individual advocates in the research process to accelerate progress and benefit patients.

The DCLG approved the ARWG recommendations and forwarded them to the NCI Director in 2010. The NCI Director accepted the recommendations and the final ARWG Executive Summary and Recommendations were released in March 2011.

The full ARWG report will be available in the future.

To order printed copies of the ARWG Executive Summary or Recommendations, please contact the NCI Office of Advocacy Relations via email or phone at (301) 594-3194

The ARWG recommendations are primarily intended to meet the specific needs of NCI. As such, they are based on the culture, practice, and structure of NCI. Although some of the recommendations are limited in scope, the ARWG hopes that its report is applicable across multiple research environments, thus serving as a guide for how the broader research community can engage research advocates.
