AnatQuest home page description:

• Image viewers:
  There are 2 viewers. Clicking on each icon allows you to bring up the corresponding viewer.
  
  • Anatomical objects from the male chest area: Clicking on the icon allows you to look at whole (rendered) anatomical objects.
    
  • Cut-away views: Clicking on the icon provides body slices from the top, front, and side of the entire male body. Enlarged views from user selected areas are displayed in detailed windows which also displays the labels of the structure under the mouse cursor.
    
    
• AnatQuest title bar menus:
  
  • AnatLine: is a database interface for IT professionals to download full resolution uncompressed labeled images.
  • FTPsite: is for FTPing the unlabled cross section images.
  • FAQ: brings up a FAQ for AnatQuest.
  • Survey: for providing feedback on using AnatQuest.
  • Help: brings up this page.

Viewing Anatomical Objects from the chest area

• Anatomical Object Menu:
  Selection of an anatomical name from the menu displays a thumbnail image of the anatomical object below the menu. Clicking on the thumbnail image opens up a new window containing the enlarged image. The enlarged window can be kept around or could be dropped by closing it. Some images contain renderings of multiple anatomical objects with labels. Please note that the number of pop up image windows you can leave open depends on the size of your computer memory, so you are better off to close them when not needed.
  
  
• Save/Print:
  Clicking on the Save/Print button in the enlarged window opens up a new web page containing the same image. The image can be saved or printed through the Save or Print option off of the browser's File menu. (This is a work around to avoid the certification requirement of writing to disk from an applet).
  

The cut-away views web page description

• Cut-away views:
  Cut-away views provide the ability to explore and view in 3 dimensions the enlarged images of the front (coronal), side (sagittal), and the top (axial) of the entire male body. Enlarged views from user selected areas on each of the three thumbnails are displayed in detailed popup windows by clicking on the desired area of the thumbnails.  The detailed window for axial view allows for interactive display of labels of the chest area structure under the mouse cursor.
  
  
• Blue hair lines acrross the 3 views:
  The blue lines control the location of the X-Y-Z axis (planes) providing the cut away views of the body in three directions. They also represent the linkage between the 3 views where moving a line on one view adjusts the other views. The lines are:
  
  
  • The vertical blue line on sagittal view: represents the location of the Y plane, therefore selecting the slice of coronal view.
  • The horizontal blue line on coronal view: represents the location of the Z plane, therefore controlling the slice of axial view.
  • The vertical blue line on Axial view: represents the location of the X plane, therefore controlling the slice of sagittal view.
  • The horizontal blue line on Axial view: represents the location of the Y plane, therefore controlling the slice of coronal view.
  
  The blue hair lines can be moved by clicking on the arrow buttons under the corresponding view. The left and right arrow buttons move the horizontal lines incrementally. The up and down arrows are for moving vertical lines by pre defined increments. Alternatively the lines can be dragged by simultaneously pressing the SHIFT key and the LEFT mouse button while moving the mouse.
  
  
• Blue selection boxes across the 3 views:
  It controls the area of the thumbnail image for which the detailed image is desired. The selection box moves to the location of the mouse click and resulting in a pop up window showing the detailed image of the selected area. Alternatively the selection box can be dragged by pressing the left mouse button while moving the mouse. The size of the selection box is adjustable through detail window size menu described below.
  
  
• Sagittal View:
  It provides a cut away slice from the side of the body. The blue hair line on sagittal view controls the location of the Y-plane and the coronal (front) view of the body. The hair line can be moved by clicking on the arrow buttons under the sagittal view. The left arrow button moves the coronal view towards the back of the body, whereas the right arrow button moves the coronal view toward the front of the body. Alternatively the hair line can be dragged by simultaneously pressing the SHIFT key and the left mouse button while moving the mouse.
  
  
• Coronal View:
  It provides a cut away slice from the front of the body. The blue hair line on coronal view controls the location of the Z-plane and the axial (front) view of the body. The hair line can be moved by clicking on the arrow buttons under the view. The up arrow button moves the axial view towards the top of the body whereas the down arrow button moves the axial view toward the bottom of the body. Alternatively the hair line can be dragged by simultaneously pressing the SHIFT key and the left mouse button while moving the mouse.
  
  
• Axial View:
  It provides a cut away slice from the top of the body. The blue horizontal hair line on the view controls the location of the Y-plane and the visible coronal (front) view of the body. The hair line can be moved by clicking on the up/down arrow buttons under the view. The up arrow button moves the coronal view towards the back of the body whereas the down arrow button moves the coronal view toward the front of the body.
  
  The blue vertical hair line on the axial view controls the location of the X-plane and the visible sagittal (side) view of the body. The hair line can be moved by clicking on the left/right arrow buttons under the view. The left arrow button moves the sagittal view towards the left of the body (from our view point) whereas the down arrow button moves the sagittal view toward the right of the body. Alternatively the hair lines can be dragged by simultaneously pressing the SHIFT key and the left mouse button while moving the mouse.
  
  
• Detailed image pop up window:
  It displays the enlarged image of the selected area from the sagittal, coronal, and axial thumbnail views. Clicking on the desired area of any of the thumbnails opens up the pop up window. Pop up windows can be closed via the windows close button. Many pop up windows can be left open depending on the size of your computer memory. Currently one detailed window is opened and reused in order to prevent clients from inadvertently running out of memory. The ability to open up and manage multiple detailed windows side by side for comparison, will be made available soon.
  
  
• The viewer menus:
  They control the attributes of the displayed images - size and compression.
  
  
  • Detailed window size: It controls the size of the detailed image, which affects the transfer time based on the connection speed. The choices are:
    
    • small: suitable for low-speed modem connection. The window size is: 448x320 pixels.
    • medium: suitable for ISDN connection. The window size is: 640x448 pixels.
    • large: suitable for high speed links like DSL and T1. The window size is: 640x640 pixels.
    • Full:This selection is for viewing the entire slice in the detailed window. Due to the large image sizes the transfer time is high for low speed connections. The full image sizes are for the three body orientations:
      • Axial: 2048 x 1216
      • Coronal: 2048 x 5634
      • Sagittal: 1216 x 5640
  • Compression: controls the compression rate which affects the trade-off between the viewing speed and the image quality. Higher compression generates smaller image sizes which are faster to transfer over the network at the cost of slightly lowering the image quality. The choices are:
    
    
    • High compression: for low-speed connections. This is the default state. The compressed image is 33% of the size of the uncompressed image.
    • Low compression: for high-speed connections. The resulting image quality is high. The compressed image is 95% of the size of the uncompressed image.
    • Medium: providing a medium compression and a medium quality setting of 55%.
    • Low/Medium: providing a low-to-medium-compression and a low-to-medium-quality setting of 75%.
    • Medium/high: providing a medium compression and a high quality setting of 45%.
